A pearl is the only naturally formed gem that requires no polishing, it comes out of the oyster flawless. A foreign object enters the oysters shell and the oyster tries to expell it because it is uncomfortable. If the oyster is unable to get rid of the substance it will remain and eventually be formed into a flawless pearl. The pearl must endure discomfort in order to contain a gem.
